I posted this problem I was having this past Saturday with my 40D. It was the first time I tried the new Alien Bees transmitter and battery-powered receivers. People attributed it to a failing shutter, but then I went out yesterday for a photoshoot (without the AB transmitter mounted), and the camera worked flawlessly. Could it be something with a the transmitter making the shutter act up as a result of an incorrect sync time???

Link to problem - What's wrong with my 40D?!?!? - HELP!!!

The EXIF says you shot at 1/500. I believe 1/250 is the max sync speed for the 40D. Set it at 1/250 or slightly less and you'll be golden.

I checked out the exif data on the picture you posted and the shutter speed says 1/500th. This is too fast for that camera. Its to sync speed for flash is 1/250. You have that doubled. That is why you have the black bar half way up the picture. I would say check the exif data on all your pictures that have the black bars and see what your shutter speed is.

I also read in your other post that your camera showed a 00 for the Aperature. I have had this happed once or twice on my 20D. It came from a comm problem between the body and the lense. I had to have the kit lense repaired from my 300D due to it doing that was well.

Thanks, I'll definitely double-check on the EXIFs. As for the 00 problem... that was a few months old $900 17-55 f2.8 IS... I really hope it's not crapping out on me this early on...

Clean the connectors on the lens - it's solved that problem for me before.

1/320 was the fastest I could sync on my 30d with the AB Cybersyncs without issue.

Yup, use 1/250 or under to be safe. I could sync at 1/320 with my cybersyncs.
