I guess if you use a mono-pod a lot. But is seems like a lot of cost for what it is.

You could always get a Bogen 3232 or 234 for $20 (external link) and a knock off AS clamp from Ebay (external link). Even Kirk has some resonable priced clamps (external link)

Ain't near a pretty as the RRS version, but sure is a lot cheaper.

if you have a big lens (300 2.8, 400 2.8, 500 f4 or 600 f4) and you use a monopod alot and still like to have the ability to tilt up and down, this is the head for you. the build quality is outstanding and it held my 500 and 1D at all angles without a problem.

So far, all the comments I've read have been very positive. I've use the 3232 and did not like it. I am considering the MH-01. RRS makes excellent components that function well. Compared to the 3232, it is pricey. But if it works as described, then it is well worth it.

Compared to how cheaply built the Bogen is, the RRS seems to be the only solution to consider thats made with any real quality. If I do decide to get another monopod it will be a CF Gitzo and more that likely Ill top it with this little RRS gem.

i would honestly get it after you get the 500. before you buy it, you will need to decide if you will actually use the monopod enough to justify it. also, the $150 figure is a bit misleading because you will also need a clamp to go with it :)

Yes, it is actually $226 with the clamp.

I have this setup:
http://reallyrightstuff.com/tripods/03.html (external link)

Though I had the monopod and bogen head for a few years before discovering RRS. I have to say that the RRS QR plate makes a world of usability difference. I can now switch quickly between my monopod & tripod. With the L-Bracket on my 40D, I can go to portrait orientation in a few seconds.

I will admit that the addition of the QR head has made my monopod solution a bit less durable though. I really abuse my monopod, it had been dropped umpteen times before the RRS and I'd never wince. With that $100+ hunk of metal on the top, I've winced the last few times it came tumbling out of my Tahoe (its a long drop to the pavement).

I only paid $49 for my Gitzo monopod with the Bogen head. I bought it off Amazon new, but a few years back.
