I would like to know what external USB hard drives you are using with the USB port on the Epsons and whether you have had any issues?

Thanks

I don't use one because the Epson won't provide enough juice to power it unless the external drive has a separate power source.

Not being critical, but why do you want backup one hard drive on another? You posted about it before, but I am trying to understand the reasoning? Just for security? Why not just do the backup your cards on the Epson and leave it at that? Or take a bunch of CF cards, transfer the shots to the Epson, then do not reformat the cards. Seems like you're making things too complicated and driving yourself crazy. There has to be an easier solution for you.

When I had one I just upgraded the hard drive to a 160GB (though the max it would see was 137GB) and didnt worry about an external hard drive.

Thanks folks for responding, I have a few memory cards, but not enough to keep pictures on them, so my thinking was to have a secondary external usb drive (small one with ac adaptor) to put my pictures on in case the epson screwed up.

It appears that no one has done this approach, I hate to have just the epson to hold my pictures as I will be out with the grizzlies mid august.

right now I see 3 choices.......

1) take a laptop along with the epson (this gives me 2 operating systems and disk storage)
2) buy more memory cards to safe guard the pics (spend a lot more than an external usb drive)
3) take only the epson and say a little pray it won't screw up ( this is probably not a good idea)
4) or if I am really lucky someone will have a small drive that works with the epson (if the epson os goes bad I am screwed as I can't copy to usb drive)

I hate lugging around laptops but it now seems I have no choice if I want some level of redundancy.

I actually have never transferred from the epson to a hard drive. I backup on site to the epson, then read my cards into my laptop separately. Once I have my second backup established, I wipe the Epson.

I backup to it at weddings but don't reuse the cards...cards have gotten so cheap and if you keep an eye out you can get them even cheaper, I can't imagine formatting them and re-using them at a wedding or whatnot.

I would suck it up and buy some more cards. :)
