Seems SSDs have taken a bit of a price plunge and performance boost. I just ordered one of these:

http://www.ncix.com …ufacture=OCZ%20Technology (external link)

I will see how it works in a swap drive application, and then it goes to my wife's laptop. If I like it I will get a couple for a raid 1 PS swap drive to replace my RAM drives, which will do system swap.

Here is what the last generation cost:

http://www.ncix.com …M&manufacture=SuperTalent (external link)

at half the performance if I can trust the manufacturers specs.

I am thinking about it as a backup device for longer trips when I need a fair bit of reliability.

wow...that is a HUGE drop from just 12-18 months ago. Heck at that price it might be worth replacing my lapt drives in return for very significant bump battery life.

Currently though my primary concern with SSD's is the finite number of writes that can be made. I have yet to see a definitive answer about that aspect and since there are not many in main stream use, hard to know how long to expect a drive to last. And yeah I read the 1.5 million hr MTBF but that has nothing to do with the flash memory itself losing integrity over time. And what happens when one of these drives fails. With a more conventional HDD you can often extract critical data if it matters. Notice they mention NOT to defrag an SSD as it may decrease the lifespan. My money is on no more than 3-years for the current drives under moderate to heavy use.

But still for $400 it's a HUGE drop...

BTW, as a back up device it would be SUPER...completely reliable and short of dropping it down the toilet or overboard or getting stepped on by the odd elephant not much will go work with it...

I thought someone posted that NCIX was going out of business, or being bought by another company. They were no longer supporting certain products, but I'm not sure if this is one of them.

RAID 1 swap drive?

I'm still waiting for these to drop some more, then I'm getting a new laptop. One may find its way in to my desktop too though.

I doubt the MacBook Air has had much impact on the price of SSDs. They don't seem to be the biggest hit (no surprise there).

hardly...these drives have been availible for use for several years now...Dell & HP have been offering them as an option for TWO YEARS, albeit expensive options. the MBA is a fractional % (as in UNDER 1%) of the number of these drives sold.

That would surprise me considering how well they are doing. I know some management and staff there fairly well and they have never said anything to me and they likely would unless it was confidential.

with LED backlighting and the better production yields as well as the ramp-up in production I think we will see the multi-day on a single battery charge laptop in the not to distant future. As it sits there should be no problem getting a whole day of use from a single charge on a 8+ cell LiPoly battery...

Sorry raid 0. I have just had raid 1 on the brain for a few days now for something I am working on. These drives from OCZ were just announced July 1, the performance is up a fair bit from the last generation.

I didnt say it was the only factor. And I never heard about people flocking to get the Dell or the HP. However the MBA was a whole other story. Other factors are simply production. As company make more of them they allways get cheeper. No different than the thumb drives. I have a 128meg thumb. I paid more for it, when I bought it, than I did for both my 1 gig thumbs 2 years later.

The battery life on the SSDs needs to improve a bit more I think but some of them are getting there. But I won't be buying a laptop with one until they're only an extra hundred or so. I'd need at least 64GB, 128GB would be nice.

And of course, it'll have to be in a Thinkpad :D
