I have a dual charger for the 1d classic and I am refreshing two batteries right now and want to have them charged up for tomorrow asap. My question is, when I press refresh and the orange light comes on when do I know when it is all refreshed? After its refreshed to I click the refresh button again and does that mean it starts charging? How long do I charge the batteries for?

Sorry for the stupid questions but I really want to know because 1d batteries arent cheap :P (well the black diamonds are)

I am assuming you are talking about the official Canon charger.

In refresh, the charger will drain the batteries down all the way and then automatically switch over to "charge". You do not need to switch it. Depending on the charge level of your batteries, this could take 8 hours or more to do.

The charger will automatically stop charging when a full charge is reached.

According to my manual a full charge from completely drained battery takes about 120 minutes.

It then states that for refreshing a battery, it will take about 8.5 hours to drain a fully charged battery.

So, if your batteries are at full charge, it may take 10.5 hours for a refresh cycle.

I have never timed mine, I just plug them in before I go to bed and hit refresh. When I wake up they are ready. I usually refresh when I get two batteries dead at the same time, so I'm sure it takes much less time for mine.

Hmmm.... the manual actually does not state that, but it will start blinking rapidly.

As I said, I simply let mine charge overnight, so mine probably sit for 5-7 hours after they finish charging. I have never had an issue (haven't had my IIN for that long though). The batteries are not warm when I remove from the charger after the night, so that tells me that the charger is not attempting to charge them.

I just purchased a third party replacement battery for my 1D for $20. Are they not recommended? Amazon sells the canon brand for around $120. That's a little steep.

A slow blink should occur when you have two batteries attached. The charger only charges one at a time (somewhat unbelievably so) and so the one 'waiting' is the slow blink. The one charging is a steady light. And if one is done charging then it's a fast blink. It is counter intuitive to most chargers I think.

There seems to be alot of mixed opinion on them from what I've read, but a common complaint is that they don't actually fit properly and for many you have to actually replace their end caps from a Canon battery so that they do fit snugly. But as I said, YMMV so you may end up with no issues and love them.

Funny that they state the reason to have the refresh feature is to reduce "Memory Effect" when it is well publicized that one of the primary benefits of NiMH batteries is that they can be repeatedly charged without fully discharging because they DO NOT suffer from "Memory Effect"

Funny how many opinions are on the web about that...

Here are two Google found: One (external link) and two (external link).

Here's a snippet from the following link that explains that:

http://www.greenbatteries.com/nibafa.html#NiMH%20memory (external link)

Do NiMH batteries have memory effect?

Technically, NiMH batteries do not have a "memory effect", but strictly speaking neither do NiCds. However NiMH batteries can experience voltage depletion, also called voltage depression, similar to that of NiCd batteries, but the effect is normally less noticeable. To completely eliminate the possibility of NiMH batteries suffering any voltage depletion effect manufacturers recommend an OCCASIONAL, complete discharge of NiMH batteries followed by a full recharge. NiMH batteries can also be damaged by overcharge and improper storage (see the NiCd section immediately above this one). Most users of NiMH batteries don't have to be concerned with this voltage depletion effect. But if you use a device say a flashlight, radio, or digital camera for only a short time every day and then charge the batteries every night, you will need to let the NiMH (or NiCd) batteries run down occasionally.
