So I went Saturday and my shoes are still a little squishy.

Absolute downpours three times. Absolute downpour = Rain hard enough for me to take off my glasses and shoot just with the Mark II's diopeter adjustment, then cover up the back of a weather sealed camera.

Anywho.. photos!

A touchdown catch, but an offensive holding call on the play.

A very wet ball ends in a lot of people yelling FUMBLE alot.

He probably needs to get more than one hand on it.

They all have different EXIF data due to changing light conditions.

I see that some of your shots have shutter speeds as high as 1/4000; I can see that creeping in accidentally, especially when light conditions are fast changing, but how fast a shutter is really needed for football?

I see that your first shot exhibits a bit of motion blur in the ball even at 1/1000 of a second. As a man who may be shooting football this fall, I'd be interested to know what's really necessary to freeze all the action.

Hmm not sure but in arena football I have shot at 1/500th and didn't get motion blur.

Someone with more experience can chime in but to be honest I try and stay above 1/800 and in the 1250 range seems solid to stop motion.

Honestly, that's what I thought as well, but when I saw that the shutter speed was 1/1000 and there was still some motion blur I really got a bit confused.

well you have to figure that ball is moving very quickly as well. It stopped the player just fine. Plus the ball is going across the screen very fast.

When I've done tennis in the past, I've had no trouble freezing the ball for all but the biggest serves at 1/1000 or thereabouts, but I figured it would be unlikely that a football would be traveling at similar speeds, hence the confusion.

Away.

I think we have a case where the ball is actually not blurry so much as out of focus, as the focal point is somewhere between his arm and helmet.
