Canon 5D problem with 'shadow' on frame

Has anyone had this problem?

I am using a canon 5d in a studio connected to two flash units. When I use the 5d on 'm' setting I get a 'shadow' on the bottom of the frame. I have tried everything, initially thinking it was something obvious like the softbox in the way but it is not the equipment as I can rotate the camera and the shadow changes with the rotation of the camera.

I have tried the lense on my old canon 10d and do not have the 'shadow' so it isn't the lense.

I don't have this problem with the 5d camera set to auto, Tv, or AV it only happens on M setting.

It doesn't happen at all with my canon 10d on any setting with the same lense or flash unit!

Any ideas???? is it obvious....

I have reattached lenses, moved equipment etc etc... am at a loss now.

Thanks

Kyra.

Are you shooting above 1/200? Because that could cause what you are describing. Try shooting 1/200 or below.

What trigger system are you using?
Does it look like this?

Then its just your shutter speed is higher than maximum sync. Its 1/250s on a 5D similar to 40D.
Or if you are using Cactus triggers (which i guess you're not) they could be the culprit.

I've read somewhere last night that it could also be the mirror giving way. Can't remember the link though.

Max sync on the 5d is 1/200. I agree that this is the most likely culprit. Also, with some forms of studio lighting it may not sync properly over 1/60. Try that first and let us know if that solves the problem.

Hiya all

Yes it does look a bit like the picture but not as dramatic, I can crop the shadow out, it doesn't take up so much of the picture, it looks like a soft 'edging'. I am shooting 1/250 so maybe that is the problem, I didn't try slowering the shutter speed. Flash units are Elinchrom 500. Strange though that my old D10 is okay with this.

Thanks for the advice though, it sounds like it could be the problem.

D10 may sync at 1/250, but the 5D is a solid 1/200.

Enjoy!
