Has anyone seen this error message when shooting multiple shots using the 100mm-400mm lens? This happened to me a few times in the past. When it happens, the camera battery must be removed and re-inserted to continue shooting. The lens was mounted on the 1Ds MKII body.

If I remember correctly it's a lens error. The EMD or other component may have started to fail.

I'd send it in.

Or if you're really comfortable with working on lenses I'd open it up and re seat all the ribbon connectors. Sometimes that does the trick.

Ouch! I'm not sure I can do that because I know nothing about L series lenses. The lens was repaired by Canon for the same Error message in the past. They informed me they replaced the IS system and other important parts. The lens works like a charm besides the random Error message received.

Does the error message occur on both your bodies ?

The error message seems to occur on ONLY the 1Ds MKII body. I recently shot with the 20D and nothing happened, so I think it happens when shooting with the 1Ds MKII body.

Then I would send both in so they can determine where the problem is.

I conducted another test and found the 100mm-400mm has problems too on the 20D. The difference is on the 20D there is no error message; instead, the aperture display is 00. On the 1Ds MKII, the message will display Error 001 in the photo remaining slot. Don't get me wrong, the 100mm-400mm lens works great until this problem happens.

I just read in Arthur Morris "Art of bird photography II" that 1/2 of the people in his groups using the 100-400 have had problems, so I'm not surprised.

The "00" means that it can't get the aperture data off of the lens CPU. Some will say that it's a "dirty contact" problem but the contacts are highly reliable. It's usually further in the communication chain - loose ribbon, bad CPU, intermittent CPU, that sort of thing.

I'd send it in again. Keep the paperwork. Every once in a while there have been repeat repair issues. The 100-400 durability, at least electronics wise, has not been too good, imo.

I have had nothing but error codes with this lens for the 5 years I have owned it. When it works it does fine but I have missed numerous op's because of malfunctioning. Seldom even use any longer it but with the 500 f4 and 300 f2.8 now who would :). Might add it did / does it with my 10D, 20D, MKIIN and now the MKIII.

I have had mine for 3 years plus and never had a problem. But then again I am not using a 1 series body either.

A little L goes a long way.

Maybe you could sell your copy at a premium to one of the two gentlemen listed above! :)

Consider yourself very lucky that your 100-400 is working consistently.

lol! I took the lens in to Canon today for repair after shooting many shots. Aside from the lock up issue, the picture quality is superior compared to other lenses, so I decided to pay to get the issue fix via Canon.
