It would help to have the exif data. It looks like it is heavily cropped, soft or OOF. It appears the camera focused on the fence. There is too much space between the players which I find distracting and the horizon is tilted. I don't mean to sound harsh but this would be a throw away for me.

Catcher pulling in a high and outside ball, which the batter took a pass on. This is not much in the way of peak action.

I also agree with the above comments relative to composition and tilt.

It's hard to tell if it is slightly OOF or not at this resolution.

Some comments becuase you asked.... :)

1. PLEASE level the horizon and stand the fence vertical
2. There is way too much space between the catcher and the batter
3. The fence is wonderfully in focus...the rest not so much
4. This appears to be way over sharpened as evidenced by the anti-aliasing in the fence and batters face.
5. Hardly a peak action shot.
6. Pick either the catcher or the batter when shooting covering both leaves a avoid in the middle as you displayed here....
7. The f stop is far to deep for this type of image....you need something that drops that fence OOF quickly like this:

Whoa there Ace. You asked for comments, you got them.

If you just wanted NICE comments you should have specified that. I would have strolled right on by....I was trying to help....

BTW, I don't shoot for money either ;)

Your original post simply solicited what people thought of the shot, and people were honest.

I looked at your photoshare site and I didn't see any prior sports work. Have you tried shooting sports much before? Sometimes when a person first starts they are happy just to have a face and maybe a ball in a pretty much in-focus shot. Over time a lot of people get pickier.

Let's start from the beginning. What do you like about the shot? Taking the comments you got in the thread, what do you think you could have done to make it better?

The reason there's so many two word responses that offer no help is because of posts like this, someone asks for what others think and then gets offended at the response. Shooting for money or not there responses are dead on, keep up those type of responses so people that want to can learn.

Sports photography is very difficult and very frustrating at times. And in the beginning when you start to get results you like, they turn into pictures your not satisfied with later on. The hardest part in the beginning its especially frustrating when you capture something good and it doesn't turn out to be technically great. Practice lets you bring the technical profficiency up while also get your timing and instincts to the point of capturing great seconds (not moments) in time. My suggestion is to go spend the day/afternoon shooting and you will notice that the stuff at the end of the day is better than the earlier stuff.

Honestly the critique was dead on and certainly dished out in a positive manner. Taking the pic down isn't going to help you get any better. If you are that thin-skinned over internet comments when you asked for critique, you might want to rethink why you are on the forum to begin with.
Instead of acting childish because the opinions of people that do these types of shots regularly didn't fit your personal thoughts, why not take what they say and learn and grow from it?
I will some times go back and look at my older pictures and ones I had saved as my personal keepers. I often times am amazed at some of those shots and how much my skills and post processing improved over time.. Most of the time I can attribute my learning to people just like Randy, MJ and Dennis (other Dennis) as well as the knowledgeable veterans on POTN in the other subforums.

Hey Bro (OP),

My first post on the forum was girl’s softball photo. I thought it was good and asked for opinions. I quickly learned I was "doing it wrong". No worries read all the constructive criticism went out and shot the next day, came back the next day and got a few favorable comments on my next shot.

What I found out was how genuine, honest and unselfish the members comments were. I have learned so much that I now can see what I considered was a great shot is not the same as I would pick as a great shot. When I look at the photo in the first thread and then the photos in the second thread I really see how much I learned in a week.

Below are my first two softball post.

I can't believe the OP not only removed his/her photo, but he/she marked the thread CLOSED (whatever that means)! Man, this is not good.

Nobody is beyond constructive criticism. Accepting it in the spirit it was intended (as helpful) is a sign of a shooter who genuinely wants to get better. Responses like this only shows this person will stay at the same level of ability indefinitely.

Mike is spot on - there are way too many posts here that elicit "Nice shots. What lens?" comments when in fact the images need a lot of work. Heck, almost EVERYBODY'S images need work one way or another.

Sigh......
