Hi guys,
If anyone has enough time to answer this, please do. How do you use grey card? I know it s used to set up white balance on your camera. But how does it work? What you do?
Thank for your input and time.
Eric

Take a picture of a grey card and go to your custom white balance menu and direct it to the image you took. Then set the WB to your custom setting.

Exactly! but I would add, make sure when you take the pic of the gray card it is in the same lighting that your subject will be in!!;)

You can use it for exposure, too. Or try this: Need an exposure crutch?

You can also include it in one of your shots to be used later to set white balance, if you shoot RAW.

While we're on the topic, does anyone know how much of the frame the camera uses to set the custom white balance? Does it use the whole thing or under the partial or spot portion.

Why I ask is if your gray card does not fill the frame, will it still give an accurate WB if, for instance it fills the spot circle or the partial circle?

Haven't tried it but my guess is that it must fill the frame.
Easy experiment to perform though.

The circle. Just make sure you use the center focus point...as far as I know, Custom WB only uses the center of the image circle.

Just make sure you fill the spot meter circle. (although I try to fill the frame just to be sure:)).

Okay, has anyone tried a lally cap? it looks kind of like barbies shower cap, fits over the lens and allows you to take a shot for custom white balance just like an expo disc. I ordered one and used it approximately one time, then lost it. Seemed to work okay, but my old trusty gray card is evidently much harder to lose, so there you go. Any opinions on this product and its results before I start telling people it worked without really having that much experience with it?

Another question: Does it matter what white balance your camera is already set on when you take the picture of the grey card(or whatever else you are using) to be used to set the white balance?

I do not believe so. I think that no matter how it looks the camera sets it as white. I just use a sheet of printer paper and I always fill the frame.

I never, Not once claimed to read your post...
