I'm pretty sure the direct selection is new to the 40D.

You're right. I thought you pushed the focus point button and then then quick control dial to move the focus point.

Anyway it doesn't matter because I find that extremely awkward and longer to change points than the joystick.

Did the 20D function this way?

I know there are a lot of new 40D users out there and have found that the 40D does some interesting things that they did not know. So I thought I start a thread. So let me be the first.

When you play back the images on the LCD, the focus point of the shot is displayed on the screen !!!

I am hoping there is more *L*

I resented you for making my lazy a$$ out of my sofa just now and fetch my camera, but man I forgive you for pointing out this cool feature! ;) :D

I also have both the 40d and 5d set to directly set the focus point with the joystick controller. Really is a fast way of selecting the focus point that you want and more often avoiding the focus-lock-recompose method. When shooting weddings, sports, and other fast moving events it can be a really great way to change the focus points quiclkly and easily.

I just adjusted my 40D to show the focal points.
A great way of checking your work.
Pretty cool.

While we are being a smart arse, if you press the shutter you get a big repair bill. You press the shutter button you get a picture.

How do I make the blown out areas stop flashing from black to white?

The 30D does the same. But the 1D Mark III and the 1Ds Mark III couldn't do it to begin with. Obviously, someone thought it was a good idea, so with the last firmware update for these models, they can do it too.

that's weird because I remember my M3 doing it from the beginning

Should depend upon when you bought it, of course, but that's at least what Canon wrote in the update information. It's also in line with what the manual I read says.
But I don't have any here, so I don't know for sure.

I was one of the first to own one. Maybe I've forgotten but it seemed like I could always do that.

I just checked. The manual says the multicontroller could only select the center point. You had to use the wheels to select the other points.

It's Canon's own manual. Would be weird if that's wrong, wouldn't it?
