This thread is going to get very confusing if we start talking about multiple camera models in here. We should try to stick to the 40D because that's what the OP started the thread about. Just a suggestion...

I haven't read through the whole thread, so I don't know whether anyone has pointed this out or not, but I'm finding that what actually gets displayed (those tiny red box indicating the focal point) on the LCD review screen is really not the "focal point" but whichever point that the lens happened to be pointing at. (I'm talking about center-focusing). When you focus, hold the button half way, recompose, and shoot, then what you'll see on the LCD review screen is not that of the spot where you originally focused but the recomposed spot.

Could someone confirm my finding, or am I hallucinating, or something's wrong with my focusing?

Since this is an "I didn't know it did that!" thread, I was messing around with my 40D and found out if you hit the info button twice the information on the top lcd screen shows on the back lcd. Not only does the same information show up (nice and big too), but it behaves the same too. When you change aperture or shutter speed it toggles just the same as if you are looking at the top screen.

I'm not real sure how useful this feature is but got to thinking for someone with poor eyesight it might be helpful.

Cheers,
LeBaron

I have seen this as well - I think it makes sense that the camera detects which focus point was used - but can not track the 'recompose'.

I seem to have lost this (showing focus point in DPP) since moving focus to the af-on button & using ai-servo almost exclusively.

More on having the red focus square on the LCD when reviewing the pic's.

I love the feature, but I fuond an annoyance.

I focus on the eye.

When reviewing after the shot, I can't see if that eye is open, closed, etc.

So, I'm giong to leave it off until I actually need it on to see what may have happened on a focus issue.

I like my 40D and can't wait to actually use it!

Actually, I didn't know that. It is one feature I thought I will miss with the XTi (400D). Now, if only the LCD will automatically turn off when you put the viewfinder near your face... XTi does this.

It's EXTREMELY helpful when your camera is on a tripod and you don't wan't to change the ball head position to see that info...

Why don't you zoom in once to check if the eye is open or not. That way you can still use the focus point display and check your image.

Maybe I remember incorrectly, but the red square stayed there even when zooming in...

A little side note about the AF point in playback...

I have this feature enabled and couldn't figure out why it wasn't displaying on any of my shots. I have the "*" button activated for AF. If you don't hold that button while you take the shot the square will not be on in playback. Hold the button and it appears.

Hope this helps.
