Is it making the noise when you are zooming your lens in and out?

Focal points? Do you mean focal lengths?

The flash head is simply zooming in and out to match your lens' focal length. Without actually being able to hear it, I would guess that it is normal. I know the Sigma 500 Super I just got is fairly loud, at least compared to my 430EX.
