I think you need to get down on the left in #1 and shoot where the screen is cut out :P

Op with a slow lens like the 18-55, maybe try shooting at ISO 800 instead?

I believe that the focus is on the screen rather than the batter. This situation would have been a good place to set the lens to the hyperfocal distance, which in this case would have been 90 feet. The two different sized images make it difficult to answer your question about sharpness. Whenever someone is having an image sharpness problem, the advice is typically to post a 100% crop from a portion of the image that would illustrate the point. I agree with that suggestion as being a very good way to evaluate sharpness.

I suppose that I didn't catch the sight gag that most everyone else is commenting on. Somebody might need to explain it to me ... and talk really slow.

I purchased my First Canon DSLR in Minneapolis and opted for the EFS17-85mm IS Lens.
On the way to my hotel from town i jumped of the train at the Vikings stadium and thought i might try my first ever Base Ball Game (not unusual for a Limey i guess)
Point is i was a little way back in the seats and got very similar results.
Soft darkish contrasty shots.
I put this down to pushing the lens all the way to its 85mm limit and fairly bad light for photography.
I think bill could also have a point on the focus sitting on the netting instead of the players.

Anyway the Vikings won by six wickets:confused: I think. Or was it field goals....I dont know:D

Strange game. They have the equivalent of a goalie except that he doesn't get a stick. Things would probably go lot smoother (like it does in hockey) if everybody had stick. Also, you will notice that the penalty boxes are always full. Sometimes they all come out onto the field at once and then it is sort of looks like Rugby.
