AHH why is THAT lens so expensive?!

quick check at B&H shows the 85 1.8 at $355... not really that expensive at all... perhaps you are thinking the 1.2?

I plan on buying as many as I can. I am fond of Zoom lenses like the 300mm.

I'm going to be honest and suggest that you have much to learn. The lenses are far more important than the bodies. Aperture is your friend in low light shooting but you need to understand why.

A 300mm with an aperture of f/5.6 is going to be useless shooting low light sport with or without IS/OS/VR. A 300mm f/2.8 for example is going to get you shutter speeds 2x faster and be of use but with large apertures comes lots of glass and much greater cost.

Have a quick read of this: the link between shutter speed and aperture.
http://www.photonhead.com …rs/shutterandaperture.php (external link)

For indoor sport the most viable option per cost is the 85mm f/1.8 USM with its large f/1.8 aperture and super fast focusing. If you need more reach the 100 f/2 and 200 f/2.8 are usable indoors although f/2.8 could be getting slow depending on where you are. If you can stump up the cash the 200mm f/2L IS would be fantastic but err its a tad expensive

If you already knew all of the above, my apologies.

If you want zoom one of the 70-200 f/2.8's would be a very good start or even the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8.

Hope that is of some help!

Shooting inside without a flash would also depend on your lens. With the 70-200mm f/2.8 with will perform very well, even at high ISO.

I think the biggest advantage is the entire line of EOS lenses available.

There there is the focus, Canon is known for it's performance with sports.

That is right! If you watch a lot of sports like I do, you will notice almost all of the pro photogs on the sidelines using Canon cameras. That was enough to convince me to switch from Olympus to Canon a few years ago and I have been very happy ever since.

The OP is looking at sports shooting so I don't know if the 85 1.2 is the lens to go with as it is not the fastest focuser out there if I'm not mistaken but I've not used it.

I have used the 85 1.8 and it is a reasonably fast focuser and about 1/4 the cost.

how much did you pay for the lens?

If you're going from f/5.6 to f/2.8 your shutter speeds could increase 4 times, not 2. Maybe you were thinking 2 stops.

Yup was thinking 2 stops but got the rest wrong in my head, so that's double the reason to get fast glass now

Assuming your in the USA EOS_Newb, if so check http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ (external link) for prices..

Thank you. I have deffinately decided against the 5D because of the no built-in flash. And for me, a beginner, that is something I really need(i think). I am not also completely sold with the 40D. Does anyone have any suggestions...? remeber I want to take most shots indoors w/out a flash, but I also want to retain detail... obviously.

the lens is what makes indoor shots without flash good not the cam
but the iso performance of the 40D is great

for me, thats expensive. I literally just graduated from High School like less than a month ago. It's ok though, if I want to be serious about this, I have to have serious money, lol. I guess im lucky I live in Marin. Anyway, I guess I'll start saving my money... it'll only take like 2 weeks to get that money... but.. nvm. Thank you for helping me. I'm looking forward to more advice.

If you thought that was expensive what do you think of this http://www.amazon.com …ics&qid=1217018457&sr=8-1 (external link) ?

If you need zoom and reach for indoor sports this lens is what you'd need.

I suggest not to jump ship yet. I've tried the a200 in the camera store and it seems to be a decent camera at its price. Now, there are third party lenses out there with fix 2.8 aperture. You may want to look into Sigma 50-150 2.8 if available for Sony) or the bigger 70-200 2.8, Sigma or Tamron.

Or

If your investment in Sony is not that much yet, try to sell the a200 and buy the 40D. :) Again, look at the lenses I mentioned above. Try them first before actually purchasing them.

The high iso performance is considerably better on the 40D than the a200, which I would consider a large advantage for shooting in low light, the image quality on the a200 is great up until anything over iso400, where it starts to smear detail with noise reduction. (Don't know if shooting raw gets around this?)

What feels comfortable in your hands? Wht good is a camera + lens if they don't feel right?
Go to a shop and hold a 40D- I'm sure you'll want it!
