Hey Guys,

A friend of mine has just asked me if I would be able to take some photos of her jewllery collection as she is in the process of opening her new website to sell these products..

I have not actually seen the products as of yet.. but she says she has 60 different products and they range from £15.00 - £150.00.

I was thinking of buying some white shiney paper (like photo paper and placing the jewllery on top of it, also placing the same sheet of paper on the above side of it to make the product stand out.. maybe also directing a light at it.. do you have any better ideas please?

She has also offered to pay me for this.. how much would I charge? what would it be worth? Please advise..

Many Thanks ;)

I've only ever tried shooting jewellery once, and that too was against a white background. My only thoughts subsequent to the shoot was that perhaps the article (gold and diamonds) would have stood out better if it had been shot against a black background.

Agree with black background - also, you may want to avoid shiny surfaces, especially if you are using a flash or other light...

These are great for this type of photography:

They have quite a few at B&H - http://www.bhphotovideo.com …s_Tents_Domes_Blinds.html (external link)

You can get away with a small one for around $50, probably make your job a lot easier.

I suggest you have a look at the DIY projects in the small flash and studio lighting section. It's amazing what results you can get with home built light boxes!

I would personnally suggest a black background, but that's just me.

I am a jeweller as well as a photographer- so I take quite a lot of photos of my work for my website. I work in silver and always use a black velvet background. Generally I use an in camera flash and an off camera one to one side and a reflector (aluminum foil) to the other- here are a few examples:

I'd suggest looking through the above links and making a lightbox. Something simple, yet with loads of light. Take some blu-tac with you as well so you can stand rings up without having to resort to ring stands and remember with pieces like necklaces you don't need to get all the chain/cable in, get what's important and the selling point of the piece in.

Good luck!
