I just purchased a 40D about one week ago and I noticed a ticking/clicking sound from the body of the camera when I tilt it side to side. It sounds like a small rock or screw is floating around the inside of the camera body. You have to listen closely to hear it. Do all 40D bodies do this or is it just mine because I will return it for another if it is.

I thought it would be the mirror moving a bit, but I can't see it moving at all. Maybe the shutter moving around?

So you're saying your 40D body does it also?

So does mine (and most other XXD bodies). As noted above, it's either the orientation sensor or the onboard flash.

It's a "feature," not a bug ;)

(My vote goes to orientation sensor)

It is documented in your 40D manual.

Pretty sure it's the onboard flash--mine does it as well.

I don't know what you guys mean by the 'orientation sensor' but I let my local gear store manager hear the 'problem' and he let me see a spare part of the thing that holds the shutter in place; there are flaps / metal parts that must not be secured if not the camera wouldn't operate.

orientation sensor = tells your camera whether you are shooting portrait or landscape, just a mechanical gravity switch for the most part. Even my motorcycle has one.... (or had one before the accident)

Are you tilting your head at the same time?

I only hear the sound if I tilt my head back and forth...

To tell pop the flash up and then shake it. If the noise goes away it's the flash.
