Newbie - Equipment for Maternity/Engagement Session?

I've been lurking here for a while, but finally going to post. Many of you are so talented and I'm looking forward to building my skills and posting the fruits of my labour here

I recently purchased a 40D with 17-85mm lense. Question is, I am thinking about offering a maternity/engagement session for my future sister in law. I have been trying to learn the camera and it's settings.

I'll be taking the photos outside (beach, park areas) and wanted to work with the lighting shortly before sunset. My husband is getting me the 430EX flash for my birthday (bonus!).

Is this equipment a good start? Do I need another "basic lens"? Probably will rent, since I've spent a fortune recently. Help Help!!

www.strobist.com would be a good start. I'd try either using your 430 EX off camera or use a reflector to help fill out her shadow side if you're shooting at sunset.

A nice idea would be to have the sun behind her (sunset) and use your flash to fill the rest of the image - just a nice simple fill flash.

Thanks for your replies. Very helpful sites that are inspirational. Is the equipment that I have a good enough start? Or should I rent an additional basic lens?
