Yes - you are absolutely correct Ben :D. That's how most of the folks discuss it here on POTN. Incident readings DO get discussed here periodically, but I get the impression that people regard that with a little more "mystery." Proper use of the little dome throws some people.

Once I learned how to get good incident readings though, I felt it was the best thing since sliced bread since it would not be thrown off by the extreme differences between a black tux and white bridal gown.

I know on the 580EX there is a manual switch used for master, slave or off. I was having similar problems of what you are talking about and I discovered that in the process of moving my flash around in my back the switch moved to master. It messed up my flash but good. I have heard that version II does not have this switch, but you may want to check into you in camera settings or in flash settings to make sure it is not on slave or master.
