Flash questions for MPE-65

Is the MR-14EX suitable for use with the MPE-65 or will I regret not spending the extra $200+ on the MT-24EX with a set of puffer diffusers?

Also, what about a more budget-minded set-up with an off-shoe mounted 430EX with a diffuser?

From what I understand it the MR-14EX does work on the 65mm macro. As for the 430ex and difusser off camera, it is very good set up. Much better idea in the long run because you can move the light around more and get the light just right easier.

Short answer - the MR14EX will work on the MPE65.

For a more budget-minded setup as you suggest, take a look at some of LordV's awesome photos in the macro forum here. All taken with a speedlight on a bracket and a homemade diffuser from a cut up coke can and paper tower. I have pretty much the same setup, but my diffuser is the Lumiquest Softbox. Great setup. No need to spend $800 or whatever the MT-24EX is going for.

Most of the folks that shoot macro end up making their own macro setup. Look in the macro section, its a sticky called macro rigs.

If you do end up going the macro flash route, do yourself a favor and spend the extrra $200 for the MT-24EX. It offers a lot more over the ring light flash.

I can say with 100% certainty if you use a MT-24EX with diffusers you will never go back to a speedlight on a bracket. It rocks that much.
