Ok, so I'm now the proud owner of a brand new 40D kit. Delivered this morning and I'm already head over heels for it. Now I'm interested in getting a grip. I do take a lot of vertical shots. I am aware of the weight issue that some people complain about however I do not care. What I am not certain about is which grip to get. I have searched the forums and found several threads about several different grips. Each seems to have their pros & cons. Seems like not one grip is like or disliked by all.

All I want to know is what grip you currently use, why you choose it over other brands, fit/finish, where you bought it from, what batteries are you using in it & would you buy the same grip again?

I use a generic one from EBay. Costs 50% (or more) less - do not quite remember - I think like $45+$20 shipping, or $20+$45 shipping.

No problems on my 30D - so far.
It has a little "give"/"wiggle", but I heard Canon's have same problem which is why I went with the cheaper Hong Kong knock off.

I would definitely buy same model again. If I ever buy a 40D, I would definitely buy from same folks in HK - but no chance of me getting 40D :)

I went OEM. It was like $175 or something, but when you think about it, you're using it all the time, so I didn't have a problem with that price.

Some cameras, some lenses, plenty of gaffer's tape and beer.

Just get the Canon one... None of the other match the stability or build quality of the Canons.

I bought the Canon grip when I bought the camera from B&H.
I wanted quality with no worries.
I bought it for the benefit of using AA batteries in a pinch.
Since I got it I've taken nearly all of my shots 'vertical'.
I couldn't be more happy.

I went with the canon model and have been very happy with it. Fit is tight with very little to no wiggle. Two batterys will last all day with the camera turned to on and going in and out of sleep mode. Its also more comfortable to me in landscape position since I now have a place to rest my picky. It way more comfortable in portrait position, I find myself flipping the camera alot more then I use to, which is a good thing.

I bought my Canon grip second hand (no AA battery holder) and I love it. The batteries last all day and I definatly take more portrait shots.

The only problem I have with a grip is the ergonomics particularly the back part. It feels uncomfortable. If it was a bit curved it would be great.

Oem or 3rd party? I choose oem. Not necessarily brand new but at least I get build quality assurance.

Get the Canon grip. You paid a lot for your 40D. Don't cheap out on the grip.

I went OEM (used) for my 30D... has worked out perfectly for me... was worth the extra price for me as i take advantage of the grip everytime i shoot and it has never given me a single issue... mine does not have any wiggle or give fortunately I would be less than content feeling like my camera was about to tip or slip downward when i flipped to portrait orientation!

Although there are supposedly 4 grips that fit the 40D, including some aftermarket brands, I went with the Canon BG-E2N. I actually ordered it the same day as the camera, from different places, and it got here first, so it went on the body before I ever took a picture. Been on ever since.

A note of caution. I used NiMh AA rechargables in the grip. While they did work well, lasted for several thousand shots, I started getting ERR99's a lot. When I quit using them and went to double BP-511A's, the Err99 stopped. Too bad too, cause the AA's are a bit lighter, but they just caused problems.

i'm using the older canon version, BG-E2 , when i had my 20D. still work excellent. NO problem at all. Some things are just better off getting from Canon then from 3rd party.

battery failure can mean camera death. Think about your decision wisely.
