Has anyone ever tried this for a light source?

I make pens and post them on my web site. I was having trouble with the pics not showing the gloss finish, they looked dull. So I started thinking about getting a ring light for my macro lens but couldn't afford it right now. So I used one of those goose neck desk magnifing glass things that have a ring light in them. It works pretty good, I can now see the gloss finish. I was thinking about removing the magnifing glass and shoot through the center of it just like a real ring light. I'm new to photography and it could very well be that I just don't know how to setup my camera yet. But thats not what this post is about right now. I'd just like to know your opinions on this setup and if you think it would help to remove the glass? Or is this just a stupid idea and I need to learn how to use my camerea? (Canon20D). Anyway, thanks for looking and heres a picture of how it turned out, I know it's a little dark but I think I can fix that ok.

You might try to add some cooking oil with a Q-Tip in a line across the pen where the light will reflect the most. This should highlight and show a glossy finish better than stronger lighting as the lighting may reflect more of a bulb look from the light.

On shooting sports...If you see it happen then you didn't get it.
