Ok, so I have an XTI, and 3x4GB Ultra II CF Cards. I'm thinking of getting a CF reader for my Macbook Pro when I'm on the road and was wondering if there is any benefit to having a FW CF reader (vs. USB) when using Ultra II's.. Yes, I know the Extreme IV and such will fly (but I don't have the Extremes ;) ). Just wondering if there's any advantage for the Ultra II.

I have used Ultra IIs and Extreme IIIs a while back, and I do remember a big increase between regular USB and Firewire. It was then I learned that -If I remember correctly- FireWire transfers at some 400mb/sec while USB 1.0 transferred at half that speed. Then USB 2.0 brought things to a relative matching speed.

I use FW for my MacbookPro and I see a real difference when compared to USB.

What I would love to see with my Ext IVs is the FW800 adapter -standard with the Macbooks-, but I have not found one yet for CF (under a zillion dollars, at least).

WOOOOOOW !!!... Almost hit the buy button. Gotta check if what I have are UDMA cards, if so, they should meet the 800mbps transfer rate.

Thanks for sharing the link.

Not sure if you're really interested, but I noticed it for $40 @ Bestbuy online

I learned there might be a difference with the Ultra II, but decided to go with the Lexar FW CF Reader because both my Macs have FW800. After I ordered, I also noticed the Sandisk FW Reader was $40 @ BB :( . But the Sandisk says 400/800 which I assume means that its 800 when connected to FW800 and 400 if connected to FW400 with a different cable?

Yep. Should require two different cables.
Cheers,

Not necessarily. If your computer has a 6 pin 400 connector, the 800 will connect, and just run at the slower speed.

If the reader you are referring to is the SanDisk Extreme FireWire Reader, it has a read/write speed of 40MB/s which puts it at the FW400 speed, not the FW800 speed, no matter which FW port you use.

Nope, both my "possible" machines have 9-pin FW800 slots. So there is an "opportunity".

Yes, that is exactly what I am referring to. I guess, normally, I would look at the "extraction" port to determine whether it was truly FW800 or FW400. But that may even be moot re: the sandisk model..

I will report back when I get the Lexar in.
