Am I the only one how thinks that ergonomic on these battery grips are just wrong? I love the features that a battery grip offers even the weight is ok, but it doesn't feel really that comfortable. Do you think Canon will design a new battery grip any time soon?

It would look nicer if it was flush with the body, but I don't have any ergonomic issues.

i think there won't be a new design for awhile. since the newest grip out is the wireless one for the 40d and that hasnt even been out that long. only new grip i see is that maybe the one that might come out when the new 5d comes out. and who knows when that is happening.

I never liked the 20D's grip that much as far as ergonomics go compared to the other grips - the 400D's grip had grippy material where the base of your thumb rests while the higher-spec'd 20/30D's has nothing! Grumble.

For functionality in general, though, the grip was pretty good. I eventually sold mine as I found that I could do with a smaller body.

Nope, they're pretty terrible.

I agree on the comfort aspect but it's better than extending my elbow out when doing portrait shots. I appreciate this feature most when I'm in a packed crowd.

+1

I've got one, and am disappointed with the ergonomics on it.

I was holding a Nikon a few days ago, and the battery grip on that was beautiful -- perfect extension of the vertical grip.

I'm a little puzzled at the comments here. The grip is sold as a vertical grip. I don't understand the OP's comments that it doesn't feel comfortable. Holding it vertical is comfortable for me. As for normal holding it allows me to hold it better with my two bottom fingers on the grip portion.

I just grabbed my 5D, I think I see what you mean, but I have big hands. I've also been shooting with my 1D3 a lot lately. Maybe if Canon would put the battery opening on the side such as they do for the 1D3, it would allow for less bulk on the vertical grip portion.

Funny to see this thread. I was just looking at my 40D and Canon BG-E2N on a tripod, and from the side. I was thinking, why the hell didn't they design it with the door on the end, like a 1D, so you slip two BP-511's in from the end, and not make the darn thing look like a mushroom upside down. Or, the door on the side but so the batteries fit the long way.

The 40D is such a good looking camera, and it feels so comfortable its horizontal grip, for me it doesn't make sense the BG-E2 design, horizontal grip is a lot better than the vertical. And as canonloader said, why not slip two BP-511's in from the end? Come On Canon! I know you can bring something better. Maybe not for the 40D but please work for the 50D battery grip, please don't just add another letter like BG-E2X, design something new!!!

I find the battery grip help me on the 40D in finding the DOF button. Before I got the grip I always had trouble locating the DOF button.

I believe the BG-E2N just has a rubber gasket on the battery door, other than that the exact same.

I think the grips actually improve the ergonomics of the cameras. At least it makes them easier to hold for me...
