Unless this was the look you were going for (the Dave-Hill-but-not-really/dragan-esque/lucasart look), less is more in Photoshop in most cases.

yeah... just the dirty look.... something i was playing with today. I need to work on the orangeness of the skin. Just thought it was an interesting effect :D

The effect looks nice on the background but I'd duplicate the layer, make the effect on the top layer and delete their faces and skin because it just doesn't look right.
