No room for an in-home studio?

I'd love to throw together a little in-home studio that I can learn and practice with. The problem is that I'm in college and living in a small two bedroom apartment that doesn't leave much space to work with. We've got a dining and living room, but that's the "common" area. I don't think my roommate would be too happy with all my gear out there when she is entertaining guests. Or rather, I'm not too sure how comfortable I'd feel with other people lounging around my gear.

I'm thinking that I don't have enough room in my roof to do full figure shots, but maybe some head shots? I just want something to learn/practice with. I'm hoping I have enough room to do some work similar to my friend, Grant.

Here are a couple pictures of my room to give you an idea of what I'm working with.

Do you guys think my room has any potential? If so, shoot me some ideas!

Anyone mind posting some pictures of their in-home studios?

And for what it's worth, here is a list of the gear that I'm currently working with. I will be adding to it, obviously, if I decide to set up an in-home studio.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM

Lighting:
Canon 580EX II Speedlite
Lumiquest Promaz System
A Better Bounce Card

I'm thinking maybe I will move my desk so that it is parallel with the TV...

hmm i think u'll be able to work something out if you only stick with headshots... it might be a little tight tho. you dont want to go with wide angle because u might end up getting distortions. u can even see if your 70mm can get just the head. get a basketball or something and try zooming into it enough where you want it.

I utilise my common area - I just make sure that nobody is going to be having a gathering when planning to use the area, move out the furniture from the living room into the kitchen leaving some room there and go at it for a while... it usually doesn't take more than about 10 mins to set everything up or take it all down so it's practical to do, at least with my house setup.

I agree.

P.S. I have that same laptop. Also, if you are in college, why is your room so neat. I think that is illegal.:D

The apartment complex is VERY old. With that said, the kitchen/dining room are tiny. There's no room to move any of the furniture anywhere else. :(

I just moved into my apartment. I've only slept in my room for about 15 days. Give me some more time and it'll progressively get messier. ;)

I think you could have done most of those shots outside, w/o a black background or studio by shooting in a dark space w/ a fast shutter speed. Perhaps a garage during the day or in any open space at night.

It'd be nice to shoot indoors, though. It gets hot where I live. :p Dry heat, yes. But it's still hot!

Stretch out your futon and you have plenty of room to shoot porn. Do enough of that and you can buy a mansion with all the space you could ever want.

That's not the first time that has been suggested to me. LOL!

Offtopic and random observations, but is that in UCSD? I'm considering going there. I also have the same alarm clock as you .
