I have had good experiences with my ST-E2. Another option for you is another flash unit. Your 580 can be used as the master and the other one the slave. You can also disable the one mounted on your camera so that it doesn't fire if you don't want it to. And with this option you have a back up flash if you ever need it.

Given the small difference in price I personally think you would be better off buying a 430EX rather than the ST-E2. This would give you a much more flexible setup as your existing 580EX when mounted on the camera and set as 'master', can be used to fire the 430EX exactly the same as the ST-E2 would. This is still true regardless whether to set the 580Ex to flash or not.

Maybe get the "CanonOC-E3 Off-Camera Shoe Cord" as another option along with the 430ex

Off shoe cord is too short to be useful, it's really just for use with flash brackets.

Actually indoors I've had a lot of luck with my ST-E2... definitely doesn't have to be direct line of site... amazing how the IR bounces around the room! I've actually had it fire my flash that was behind my white fleece background....

sorry for the crappy cell phone pic, but here you can see the 430's are behind the ST-E2...
