Which gel from the roscolux swatch book would everyone recommend that I use for shooting people with a couple of speedlites during sunrise on a beach?

Unfortunately, the sun won't wait for me to finish a shoot before it is pounding down from high above so I would like to get a good idea of the different gels I could use to try to match the early morning sunlight on the east coast with my subjects.

How about for sunsets?

Thanks in advance!

I know that many will give you the specifics of which gel to use for what and when based on color temperature. I found that I always want to warm my main light a bit and I use both 1/8 and 1/4 CTO for warming in sunlight.

You might try out a bastard amber as well or perhaps some combination of bastard amber and CTO depending on how intense the sunrise is.

Never tried the bastard (oh my!) but I've seen others using them. I've also seen people using the Straw gels for daylight sun.

Sunrise/Sunset can be anywhere from 2800k to 3400k depending on where in the world you are, pollution levels, e.t.c. That's Full CTO or 3/4 CTO territory. Best to keep the flash on the blue side of the sunset so 3/4 CTO would be your safest bet if you could only have one.

Hi Hermes,

Don't you find that 3/4 or full CTO gives you too much of an orange/bronze look?

Robert - at sunset (literally the half-hour/hour before the sun sets or after it rises), 3/4 CTO is slightly cooler than the ambient light and looks nice and natural if it's properly diffused so as to not stand out. If we're talking generic late-afternoon or early-morning light then I usually go to 1/4 CTO and step up to 1/2 if it seems necessary.
