Everyone knows shooting hockey has it's challenges. Testing out my new 40D yesterday was a lot of fun compared to the XTi I've used for the past 2 years. However there's still one thing that's bugging me that I can't seem to figure out how to solve.

I've played around with the various settings to get what appears to be the best results but I still have a problem with the blacks. Specifically having the black edges come away with a purple-ish tone. It's most notable when I do PP adjustments with the white balance and if I crop out the subject for another sort of project. What may be the cause/cure for this? Is it the lighting that's not going to change so I can't really deal with it? Is it something in my settings? Any advice is appretiated.

Here's 2 shots from yesterday. All taken from the second level with my 85mm lens. Manual settings, ISO400 f/2.2 and either 640 or 800fsp. I've cropped them and done a quick white balance to share with a friend.

Whoa...your whites are a bit harsh...way to "nuclear" on my monitor especially the boards in the first shot. Also, something else strikes me as odd, although can't quite say...maybe too much overprocessing or oversaturation? Did you use any NR?

For hockey you should use a custom white balance taken from the ice surface. It can help a ton when PP images. Also, don't be afraid to bump your ISO to 800 and then you can get a bit more flexibility on shutter speeds, DOF and the like. If you are at the Saddledome for these (?) I suspect your light may be pretty good (heck if you could get away with 400ISO that's pretty good!) and you could freeze the action better. There should be minimal noise with the 40D.

Cheers!

Chris
