We had a dozen POTN people at my home track, Waterford Hills, MI, today.
These are all with the 70-200 f/2.8 + 2X TC. EXIF is included. All except the last two, were shot through a hole in the chain link fence, so the AF only had a fraction of a second to lock on. I think it did a great job!

===============
EDIT: WOW! I just upgraded Firefox to v3 which is color managed & can't believe the difference in the images! They had much better exposure & contrast in version 2!
These look all washed out! They still look OK in unmanaged Internet Explorer, though.
===============
EDIT #2: I've updated the images for color managed FF3, so now they will look a bit dark in Internet Explorer & FF2. Image #3 was processed to a "between" density to try to average out the differences in the browsers.
FF3 users, with Color Management enabled should see them as I do.

I've never noticed heat waves like these from the exhaust before.
