I'm going to stop buying so many magazines and instead buy books that I should probably already own. Today I bought:

"The Americans" by Robert Frank

How do you like that book? I saw a smallish documentary about Robert Frank and 'The Americans' on The Genius Of Photography and I quite liked his pics :)

I recently bought 'The Moment it Clicks' by Joe McNally, fantastic book, very interesting with loads of anecdotes. Highly recommend it, the guy is a hell of a photographer too :)

In fact it's soo good, I'm going to read it again, not something I've ever done with any book!

I love the book. I'm going through it again slowly; it is easy to want to go through it in one sitting. Each of the photographs is powerful in its own way but when you hold them together, it is amazing seeing a slice of America like that. At that time (mid 50's) there was no slavery, of course, but so many signs of overt racism before the Civil Rights Movement. As a child of the 70's and 80's, this is a fascinating glimpse into the country's history where we thought were we doing so well but so many were still oppressed. This book was what first made me interested in short series of works, all done in one place, that make you feel what it was like to be alive then and there.

I picked up a copy of the new "Steidl" print version of the book and the actual material is lovely. Robert Frank was directly involved in transferring his original prints to the book, he chose the printing paper, the cover, etc. The paper itself is gorgeous, but you may not be into the tactile printing things like me.

My previous purchase before that was:

Magnum Photos - a collection and biographies, printed by Photofile (external link)

There is an awesomely huge hardcover version but then a very affordable paperback as well. It lists all of the photographers from the Magnum Collective, gives a biography and one sample image of their work. An excellent primer and history of the world's greatest agency.

Last one I got was a huge volume full of photos of mountains. I really don't have an eye for mountain shots, so I thought I'd look at some of the best pics and see what I could learn.

For Christmas, I received Paris by Robert Frank.

I've only had a cursory glance but it looks to be a worthy cousin to The Americans.

Once again, the Steidl printing is just phenomenal. I love photo books of this quality. They're really amazing as pieces of art in and of themselves from the bookmaker.

Anyone else get a photo book for the Holidays? (Not a book about photography but a book of photography.)

Last photography book I bought was the Taschen "Arnold Newman." One the least expensive Taschen books out there. Wonderful portraits on every page. I was thinking of picking up Stephen Shore's "Uncommon Places" and one of Gregory Crewdson's books sometime soon.
