First off, I am posting this in the weddings section, because I am specifically looking for a tripod that is quick and easy to use for group shots. I figure if I get one that works well for weddings, it will work for anything else too.

I had an ok one before but it had the screw legs which I didn't like. It was also bulky. However, the legs could open all the way to lower it to near ground level, which was nice. I lost my old one. There are just so many options on B&H that I am just lost!

Here are my requirements/questions....

Less than $150 (preferably $100)
Ball head??? Is this a good idea for weddings? I think it would be very handy.
Light weight
Compact
Able to hold a 400L 40D combo

Wanting a quality, lightweight, compact tripod that will support a 400L is about impossible for $150 let alone under $100. You are going to have to compromise between, price or weight. You have around $2000 worth of camera gear. Why trust it on a $100 tripod?

if you up your budget to $200 range, you could at least go with a Bogen 055 series or a Velbon.

What about if we eliminate light weight and compactness? Also, supporting the 400L is much less of a concern for me.

The tripod/head combination most often recommended on this forum - for some VERY good reasons - is the Manfrotto 055XProB topped with their 488RC2 ball head (external link).

This rig is a very good compromise between portability and sturdiness that will last you a very long time. If you intend to haul it around a lot, I highly recommend one accessory - the Manfrotto 3044 carrying strap (external link).

This Bogen/Manfrotto setup (external link) is around 6.6 lbs total weight. I probably wouldn't go anything less then this tripod. Cost is $197.

I certainly would not want to use a 400mm lens with a 486RC2 ball head. The 486RC2 is more prone to creep than the 488RC2. I have both and know this from experience.

I use my 486RC2 on a monopod where creep makes no difference at all (one merely moves the monopod to follow the creep).

That recommendation was based on his statement about eliminating the 400L from consideration.
