Not from Canon but cameras like FZ18 from Panasonic shoot RAW natively.

If you are interested in the FZ18, you might want to wait for the replacement FZ28 coming out next month.

what difference does it make?
same RAW in a slightly different menu

(the "crack" is actually a separate program on the SD card it has the same original firmware displays, just additional items

The difference is I worry about voiding my warrenty and also I cant be bothered with faffing about - I want something that doesn't take messing about with to already prioduce RAW

So I guess this means the G9 is the only Canon RAW P&S then?

I guess the G9 but the CHDK program does not void the warranty (according to Canon) and if menus are too complicated (you check the RAW box - is that complicated?)
then "faffing" it is

but I think using RAW in photoshop layers and masks is complicated so what do I know

Perhaps you might be interested in the new Panasonic LX3? There's a lot of buzz about it coming out soon, but no real reviews for it yet.

CHDK doesn't actually re-flash the camera's firmware; it just installs in the camera's RAM to provide the extra functionality. So no harm, no foul.

Dennis

very interesting Dennis - thanks for the links...

any idea what this means ?

" The CCD in Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 can reproduce images shot with the lens set from 24mm to 60mm in any of three aspect ratios; 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9, so you can always capture dynamic, richly expressive shots with a wide perspective. The newly added Multi-aspect mode allows the camera to take a image in all 3 aspect ratios simultaneously for photographer to choose the one that best takes the advantage of the scene after shooting. "

I get the gist but can one not just use the whole of the sensor rather than various aspects of it , albeit simultaeniously?
(i.e. can't you just get the RAW file out of it? _ I can't find any reference to this)
EDIT: on further reading found it on DPREVIEW where it says output format is jpg + RAW, I presume RAW is RAW is RAW i.e. no cropping , so what formatratio does that give to play with??

I have a Panasonic / Leica P&S that shoots RAW and has the 16:9 format. EVERYTHING it shoots is in 16:9 at the RAW level, even if you have the camera set to another format, the RAW still contains the entire sensor's image.
