I'm not sure about a specific lens for the 'ring shot', but i'd say an 85 f/1.2L would be an awesome wedding lens all round.

What body are you using by the way?

got my lousy sigma 50mm f2.8 macro. this way i can have a decent portrait lens and a closeup lens at once!

the more i shoot the more i find that those who are very gear specific are really wasting their time and money. you can make the most of your situation and what you have on hand anytime...just have to be creative.

I would usually use a 70-200; not a macro lens with its 1.5m minimum focus distance, however I have got reasonable results with it.

I would, however, give the 85L a go. It's certainly one I'd like to add to my collection.

I use my 24-70 since it's the closest focusing lens I have, although I suck at ring shots because I tend to forget to do 'em in the first place.

We use 100mm F2.8 macro. I'm not sure about 85f1.2L for rings shots, because you need to be at least about 5 feet (1.4m) from the subject. This lens is a money maker lens for portraits, though.

I have two lenses that I prefer to use. The 24-70L, and the 50L are my favorites. I use the 24-70 with out extension rings, and I use the 50L with a 12mm ext ring to make a nice macro shot, and then I use my ring light to make the photo pop!

Ditto that. The 85 1.2L is NOT the lens you want for macro-type ring shots. Even the 50's (take your pick out of the three non-macros) are somewhat better because there's a shorter minimum focusing distance and the ring will fill more of the shot. Go for a macro lens or pick up a set of extension tubes for a less-expensive alternative!

I actually use the only non canon L lens I take to weddings for the ring, It is a sigma EXDG 28mm macro and it is really nice especially at macro. When I use it on my 1DS I will have to allow for a slight crop as I get a black shadow in two of the corners(the shutter maybe) but so far have only used it on crop bodies with great results and tiny DOF as it is a 1.8 lens,I really love the macro shots on this lens, breathe a little and your subject jumps out of focus.

i dont do weddings - but i just got a 100 macro :) and for fun - shot this just then for you... its a canon inspired ring shot :) of my wedding ring thats not even 3 years old yet and i only wear it on the weekends (i work with my hands)

luckily the ones you will be shooting wont be so scratched up i would hope :)

this one isnt at min focus distance - at f4 and yeah you might wanna try a nicer backdrop than 2 canon lens caps haha - But it was just for fun and im looking for any excuse to shoot my macro at the moment - its bucketing outside!

I used to use the 100 2.8Macro but got tired of changing for one shot and bringing the extra lens. I use the 70-200 F/4IS and get good results. The 85L is ,IMO,the best wedding / portrait lens going but I'm not sur it will get you tight enough on the ring set.

I use the Mark II & 5D for weddings (and a 40D as a backup)--- with a wide selection of L lenses --- I have been using the 24-70 but not liking the results--- the 70-200 just does not do it for macro. I was thinking about getting a dedicated lens just for ring shots.
Typically my ring shots are rushed and I do a crappy job with them-- due to the price point I am at I need to start improving my ring shots for some diversity--- the ones that work for me is where the couple holds their rings out in front of them--- not really a macro shot but has been working. I would like more of a macro shot of the rings and flowers etc.

I am really not interested in setting up my tripod for the shot--- so need something quick--that works in low light. I carry my tripod in my car for every wedding but yet to actually use it.
