The American Queen that is. What decadence, I wish I could afford it. :)

From people who follow these things, the boat was built sometime in the 50's it is the largest riverboat still in operation and it holds about 450, comfortably. Some actually do live aboard it and go where it goes, year round. Must be nice, heh? Enjoy...

This is from across the river on Pettibone Island, shooting into the sun. I had to use the Tokina, cause even the 70-200 was to narrow at 1/4 mile to get it all in one frame. This sucker is huge. No filters with me either. I desaturated and then used Edit/Fade to about 54%...

I don't normally like B&W, but this screamed Desaturate me...

As did these period actors that showed up to have some fun. They did play the part too and never once looked at the camera...

What nice set of photos, fit for a Queen!! While I like the whole set, 2, 3, & 7 really stand out. You might consider cropping #2 from the bottom and right to take the boat out of the center. Being a fan of B&W, you did good on that one. Wonder how #3 would look in B&W with a little sepia?

Thanks for the kind words Canonguy. Ya know, I did think of Sepia, just as I was getting done processing these. I have a number of other shots, of the people, that I will give that a try on today when I get some time. I do like Sepiatone pictures, they have just enough color to bring it out of the flatlands of B&W. :)

I like 3 and 4 the best. I probably would have started laughing if I saw those people... but then start taking pictures. :D

Thanks Jeremy. If I had been there without a camera, I might have started laughing, but since I had planned this outing for a couple days, I saw it as a great photo op and laughing never entered my mind, settings and ISO did. ;)

Not real sure why they were there. It's not like the boat drew a crowd or anything, although I think it was meant to. I got there early and there were just a few people there by the time I left, most of them boat workers. These people live here though and I guess are hired by the tourist bureau.

If you're a 'reenactor' person, any excuse to dress up in period cloths is a good excuse. I used to be a Cowboy Action Shooter and I miss the getting all dressed up in my period (late 1800's cowboy) cowboy cloths more than the shooting.

Well, that's what I thought. They did look like they were having fun rather than doing it as a job. This is the first time I have been down there when one of the big ones comes in. You can't see it in these shots, but there is a smaller one parked behind the queen and an even smaller one parked way up front. They both are paddle wheelers, but just do day trips and one has a dining room and I think does evening cruises up and down the river all summer.

This is an old river town and the park you see in some of these is a man made park. The original bank of the river curved in here for about 2 city blocks and the tie up was "inland" by a couple hundred feet I guess. There are three old real steamboats that sunk at the docks and are now buried in the fill of the park, boilers, paddle wheels and all. Hows that for history? There are many old stories of steamboats burning and sinking at the docks all through the towns history. They must have been real tinderboxes.

Thanks Bill and Kenny. No filter, cause I didn't think I would need it and left it here. :)

Kenny, the second one is also desaturated, then I used Edit/Fade on it at 54%. You can see some color in the corner of that tent thing behind the streetlamp and some green in the weeds along the sidewalk. ;)

I did take the tripod and all shots are from on the pod. But it was like 7am when I left, foggy and I knew there would be fog for as long as I was there. Why bring the filter? :)

Very nice, Mitch. I hope you do not mind this edit of the first image, but you had mentioned in another thread about a lot of noise when blending layers in Photoshop, I believe. This edit uses masked layers with different tone adjustments, etc. blended together. Of course, it ruined the nice foggy effect, but perhaps illustrates working with layers without generating too much additional noise.

Wow, that looks cool. I need to take the time to read about masking and blending. I worked through it once awhile back, but never used it, so you just forget that stuff if you don't use it. :)
