Hi,
I got the EX430 (not version 2, original) today.

When i put it on my camera (400d) it works great with the EF50 1.8 lens. It lights up that icon to show its adjusted to the sensor size, it shows that the focal length is 50, and ETTL lights up and the M dissappers. Perfect.

When i put it on my camera with the kit lens 18-55 4.? - 5.6, sometimes it works fine, and as I adjust the zoom it shows this on the flash display, but the icon to show the sensor size adjustment does not show up? Also after a while it will go to M mode and refuse to come out, and constantly show a focal length of 14mm. Even worse it will not let me adjust this on the flash manually, both ETTL and M are lit up.

Questions.
1. the APS width adjustment icon does not show up with the EF-S lens, is this because not adjustment is necesarry when a crop body is matched with a crop body lens (efs)
2. Why does it switch to manual and refuse to come back, turning on and of the camera and flash has not effect, if i put the ef50 on, power cycle the camera and flash, then put the kit back on it seems to work for a little while again.

Do i need to change a setting on the flash? or a funtion on the camera?

Thanks in advance.

Constantly showing 14mm means the wide angle diffuser panel isn't seated back in properly. Give it a little nudge till it clicks softly.

If I recall (I don't pay attention to these things anymore), the crop indicator won't show up when you're bouncing, only straight on. It could also be because it's an EF-S lens, but I'm not sure. Someone else can clarify this.

If it's switching to Manual, you may have a loose connection between your flash and the camera. Try tightening the thumb wheel on the flash a little more. If that doesn't work, see if you have a loose shoe. Instructions here: http://www.conraderb.com/flashrepair/ (external link) Says 20D but it applies to all EOS cameras. I had to perform this on my 1D II, 10D, and off-camera cord.

Don't think its loose as it always works with the EF 50, and i've done and inpection now and it looks good, but i'll try the diffuser plate thing, as i probably never used that with the 50 on, but certain did with the 18-55

Thanks man you hit the nail on the head, it was the diffuser, gave it a nudge and it went back to auto, and the aps icon even lit up :D

I owe you a bear ;)
