Not necessarily the card reader is faulty, the USB port on your computer could be dead. Try different port.

OP is using the card reader built in to the computer.

If running Windows XP, try this.

- Open Control Panel
- Launch Administrative Tools
- Launch Computer Management
- Select Removable Storage

It should show all drives and contents. Right click and select open or change the drive letter.

Yes, but most people don't know that and even fewer have ever opened up their case or are willing to.

If we're inside the case, simply re-seating the connection to the motherboard may fix the problem. If not then the next step would be to switch ports on the motherboard.
