Sorry to bring up an old thread but I had a question...

If you don't have an L-bracket already, would the newton system be cheaper?

End up only being a bit cheaper (around $50 at most). You can see my price comparisons in I believe the bottom of the second post.

I know this was originally posted sometime ago but wanted to thank Ben for the wonderful review. Of course I didn't find it until after I went through some pain myself trying different brackets each of which I returned. When it all came down to it my criteria were pretty much the same.

Light weight but not flimsy
Easy to carry when not in use
Utilizes my existing Plate(s)
Keeps the Flash in the proper orientation when in both Landscape and Portrait as I've recently gotten in to using light modifiers like the Lumiquest Pocket Bounce.

If only I would have seen this review before I spent more money then I would like to admit in buying / returning a few different setups. I ended up with settling on this exact bracket after researching on my own. I guess I am happy that I ended up here but would have saved myself a lot of time and return shipping costs if only I had found this first.

That said I haven't received mine yet, I should have it Wednesday or Thursday. I am looking forward to getting it as I have a benefit gig I need it for on Saturday.

Believe me I was also in the same mindset thinking that there was no freaking way I was ever going to spend $335 for something like this but ultimately ended up here anyway. If anything I hope that my experience can help someone decide to go right to this and not do what I did.

this is the second time I have read this thread  the first time was last summer when ben first did the review. then again now that I am doing some more research on brackets... LOL I too said no way I'll ever spend that much on a bracket... but now I am seriously thinking of it. it's giong on the wishlist and probably get into the budget soon :)

CDS I had forgotten (or missed reading) your post below. ROTFLOL! I totally understand! and in fact, I'll see that and up you one, if I win the lottory, I'll buy everything in their catalog, and invite you over and we can build entire fleets of intergalactic star ships W00T! LOL

seriously, if you don't make money out of your photography then i don't think it is justify enough for you to spend $300+ for the bracket. For some of us, we need this for our work and invest in this is a good choice.

Or if you are just fortunate enough to have the money to buy nice equipment for a hobby that you are really into...

+1 I don't make much money off of my photography, but I still like having good equipment, but I also do a lot of DIY stuff too.

I got my copy today and it is really cool but was wondering if anyone else feels like it gets in the way of the focus ring?

I have a Canon 40D (No Grip) with a RRS L Bracket installed. I install the setup on the left side of the body with my 24-105L. This seems fine until I go to portrait mode then I have a hard time getting to the focus ring no matter where I place the flash ring on the rail.

Eh, maybe a little, but all the options out there have some minor issue...

you do lots of manual focusing with your 24-105?

i've use with 16-35 (smaller lens) and no problem. HOWEVER, it takes some time to adjust your style (unless you have BIG hand) :)
