Macro peeps...ever take pics of the dead?

Ever taken a picture of an insect that has passed? Is that considered cheating? Thoughts please, as I am just curious if there's a rule?

Yes, when I first started out and it was an initial experiment to get used to the 50mm/tubes combo. Also took some images of a dying black house spider as well about a year or so ago - had never managed a good set of them prior to that. Poor thing, I couldn't do anything to help it...

In general most people only use dead bugs for target practice- ie very good for honing your technique, otherwise they tend to get shown for some other interesting reason - eg what on earth happened to this bug ?

Some high mag focus stackers actually do have to use dead bugs for their shots when they are shooting near 10:1 and doing 50 shot focus stacks.

So in general most of us shoot live bugs- part of the challenge. I can just imagine what would happen in the nature bit if people started doing shots of stuffed animals/birds.

edit: it was still alive when I took this shot @ around 5pm or so from memory, in fact, it was still alive the next morning. No, I didn't hurt it or cause its death, I have no idea what happened to it, I can only think it lost out in a battle with another house spider...

i don't take any pics of dead insects anymore. but i did at first to get some practice in. now i have friend that is trying to learn and she started out shooting some dead beetle first. heres one she did the other day.

Cool. I've never photographed dead things...was just curious as to whether there was a hard rule, or not. It'd be a helluva lot easier, but, as Brian said, living things are part of the challenge.

Freeze 'em.

Isn't that like torture? Freeze em, and when they wake up, they have '0' sense of reality...hehe.

i don't freeze them. just go practice and you'll get it.

I've taken a bunch of macros, and not shy about my skillls. I was just curious about whether it's common practice, or not, to take pictures of dead insects, especially ones that aren't seen on a day to day basis.

I'd like to own an MPE some day, but for now, the 100 macro will suffice. Maybe extension tubes will help with mag. at some point, but for now, I have to pay off the other lens I recently acquired.

Only if it were a 'macro' of it's carcass...hehe.
