I saw a mini review on POTN where someone stated tha the Sandisk 8GB SDHC Extreme III card worked pretty well with xfer speed a tad slower than a PNY card.

I would appreciate any opinions on which make and type of SD card you use or would use in this slot. I have a 4gb Sandisk Extreme III CF card in the other slot already.

Many thanks

Jamie

Have a look at Rob Galbraith's site and his (comprehensive) CF/SD speed tests in the 1D III - based on those I chose an 8G Sandisk Extreme III SD card and the same CF.

I have two 8GB Extreme IV and one 4GB Extreme IV and two 2GB Extreme III, all working like a magic, i have one Toshiba [cheap] 1GB SDHC and one free [won] 4GB Kingston SDHC, till now i couldn't open any of those SDHC because i don't have SDHC card reader and all card readers i checked either have SDHC without CF or CF without SDHC and just few have both but not sure if really have both and working fine.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but i figured people would be nicer instead of yelling at me to use the search function. :)

So I've owned the 1D Mark III for about a month now and have been reading about CF/SD read / write speeds.

For the buffer. It appears that the rate at which the buffer goes back up is based upon the write speed of the card (the faster the write, the faster the buffer gets back up to X).

Now for the longest time I thought CF cards were faster but based on Rob Galbraith's test:

SD cards are actually faster!

Am I better off investing in some sandisk SD cards?

So how often do you fill the buffer? And how comfortable are you changing SD cards vs. CF cards while on the go, or in bad conditions? If you don't fill the buffer, it really doesn't matter which is faster. I can single-shot a series of 20+ frames of a warbird on final RAW+Small JPEG without filling the buffer on an Extreme III CF (the older 20 MB/sec ones) and I'd much rather change a CF card in the cold while wearing gloves than an SD card.

good question jon. i don't think i've ever filled the buffer before. maybe my cards are fast enough. :)

you also make some valid points about the size of SD cards in those situations.
