With a black and white image, how much difference is there from rgb to cmyk. I'm sending some greeting cards to a printer, they say to convert to cmyk; I've got photoshop elements and cannot convert. So, i'm wondering if the black and white is altered in this conversion.

Allot of comercial prints need CMYK because thats how they're set up Cyan, magenta, yellow and K+black. They can convert but will probably charge you to do so. I don't know anything about elements but its an easy conversion in photoshop CS. Mode/CMYK.

maybe you could send the file to someone on here that could convert it for you if its not too large.

US WebCoated (SWOP) v2:

Will look very wonky in a non colormanaged program I suspect ;)
Edit: No it won't, because "save for web" saved it as an untagged RGB image :o

Looks okay in PS, but you loose some color in the purples (as to be expected)

Ive done it but when i upload it to smugmug it gets converted to RGB.
I can email it if you PM me your email address.
Its best to speak to your printer and ask them what profile they prefer before sending anything off.

EDIT: Just seen Rene's post. Thats the same profile i used as well.

Rene & Dave, thank you. Rene, am I correct in that I am only seeing some saturation/hue differences in the color portion of the image? The tones and contrast in the black and white do not seem to change? I sent this image because it is the only one with any color in it. All of my others are purely B/W.
Dave, I've spoken with the printer on a couple of occations, their system will automatically convert to cmyk, they will send some sort of hardcopy when I place the order, but that will have been after I've placed the order and then I would have to scramble to find someone with Photoshop CS to get it converted and sent back.
This has been an immense help.

Peano, I was really wondering about the first two images you had up there. Thank you for your re-processing as well. I can see where if I sent in a colorful beach scene, the conversion would drive me nuts, yet for my B/W, it doesn't seem to make much of an impact.

Yes, I couldn't understand the change in color. When I tried to open the image locally in Firefox, I got an error box saying the image was defective. So I re-saved it, and the color returned to normal. I don't see any difference between RGB and CMYK.

Your monitor sees color in RGB so it may or may not see color accurately in CMYK and then theres all the variables. The import place to see color is at the printer with his equipment and his calibrations. Thats why it can be important if color is VERY important to go on a press run because they can make color changes right there and you can see exactly how the paper is taking the ink. Probably not an option in your case.

Right, I must have been asleep or something...
Ignore my latest post: that image was saved for web, and is an untagged RGB image. Learned something again ;)

This one is CMYK with embedded profile however:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'text/html' | Byte size: ZERO

edit: And as a result will not display in FF2...
It shows in FF3 and Safari however..

If you quote my post, you should be able to see the link and save it ;)

Sorry I'm late to this party ...

CMYK black-and-white is fraught with danger, because the risk of cast is enormous. So it's best to modify the SWOP profile like this:

(Yes, I know, Custom CMYK in PS is the tool of the devil, blah blah blah ... believe me, this is a damn good way of doing things)

Here is my effort:

HOSTED PHOTO

(untagged CMYK, so will display terribly/not at all)

For best results, I:

1. Opened your RGB file, and duplicated it.

2. Converted one copy to SWOP CMYK (as mentioned above)

3. Loaded the above custom CMYK setting in my Color Settings

4. Converted the second copy to this "4-colour mono" CMYK. The blacks are 35,25,25,100.

(The trouble with this setting is that it kills dark colours, basically converts them to dark shades of grey. So that's why I need both versions)

5. Pasted the SWOP CMYK on top of the custom CMYK (making sure the colour values remained unchanged)

6. Used a Layer Mask to reveal only the pink item from the SWOP layer.

7. Flattened

8. Saved untagged (not sure if this is the safest option, but I don't want some person or program trying to re-convert my tagged file to another form of CMYK - that would defeat the purpose, of course).
