You might want to consider a 1 or 2 series Gitzo with a Markins Q3 ballhead. If you do a search on this forum, you will find several threads regarding this setup.

I recommend Gitzo 1 or 2 series as well, i have GT1540T, amazing lightweight and high quality, and now i am waiting my Q3T to play with in travel.

What is the size you'd like? There are some excellent full-size tripods available that are durable and light weight.....and there are some very compact travel tripods that can holda full-size body, most hand-holdable pro lenses and be stuffed in your waist pack as you travel.

This info would greatly shape my answer to the question.

I'd prefer the small one and weight less than 3lbs.The tripod should be able to hold a load of 10lbs.

BTW what's the difference of carbon fiber and Basalt based tripod?

The ultimate lightweight setup: Gitzo GT0530 + Markins Q3

I looked at the Gitzo options and found them out of my budget; I then found Feisol's range of tripods and now own the CT-3442 and Markins M-10 ballhead. Fantastic combination - the tripod goes to above my head height with no column extension (I'm 172cm tall though, so not a giant) and weighs 1kg and <19" folded, including head.

There's also a smaller, lighter again model but I figured the 2" folded length would be made up for by the increased extended height, especially since the CT-3442 already fit in my travelling backpack with room to spare.

Wow those legs are lighter than the 1541T! Cheaper too. Just doesnt fold down as small or hold as much weight. If those arent a big deal then this is a VERY cool setup!

ben _ this setup work outstandingly well hiking through out Glacier Nat'l Park recently. Strapped to my Gregory Z30 pack you hardly knew it was there. I've been quite pleased at its stability for such a compact setup as it holds the 40D and 70-200 f/4L with ease.

For the money, the Feisol CT-3441S is hard to beat.
