Since we travel to Belize soon, diving etc. I looked for some underwater equipment. I found this:

http://shop.nautica.at …d4580abd183f042e2625e4666 (external link)

1) I don't think I would spend 4300 EUROS for it ( you could buy another MarkIII and a lens for that money)

2) I would be a little nervous putting my MarkIII underwater, even in the housing

Of course u dont have the normal P&S underwater images. But 4000Euros is a bit out of my range so I think I have to look for a 200$ underwater housing for my P&S and hope for the best ( feels so weird touching a P&S after shooting with the MarkIII ; )

Dive gear is spendy, camera gear is spendy, combine the two and you get very spendy at best and insanely spendy as a norm, and there there is camera gear for diving..

I was a diver in the Navy and the cost of underwater photography is the prime reason I don't get back into diving...

one grain of sand on a gasket = destroyed gear.

RENT IT on site. Get a cam and a nice big strobe if you plan on diving any deeeper than 20 feet. Otherwise it'll all look blue.

ever see anyone flood a flash. thats an interesting conversation on the boat, usually not one where youngins should hear.

I would suggest a point and shoot case with a strobe. I know its possible to add a strobe to some of the cameras but i cant for the life of me remember which ones they are. This will at least give you the ability to record the trip and get you feet wet. Plus it will show how much of a hassle it is to do underwater photography.

Just remember to look for bubbles when the camera is in the dunk tank. Keep your eyes on it and never forget about it. Always be on the look out for the bubbles. Bubbles = death of expensive equipment.

My uncle just got back from a diving trip to Australia. While a 40D and some nice glass was his choice on land he went a bit more basic for diving. A canon S1 IS and the dedicated canon dive case for it. He got some great scuba shots with it and the whole thing cost less than $400.

I have one word for anyone considering housing a DSLR for underwater work: INSURANCE! While Subal housings are fabulous and built like tanks, operator error does happen. I don't mind self insuring (meaning no insurance) on some compact cameras in OEM or similar housings like the small Ikelites, but not anything more expensive.

I think the one you are talking about goes to 10' then you need the case to go deeper. A co worker of mine had one of those and told me so when i was talking to him about underwater cases.

Agreed. I would rather have lost $400 then $1400+.

I've bought a few of the Olympus Stylus 770SW cameras for work, nice little cameras, very pocketable and seriously tough. Rated depth depends on the specific model. About half (including the current 850SW and 790SW) are rated for 3 meters/10 feet. However, there are also a lot of the range (including the current 1030SW and 770SW) that are rated for 10 meters/33 feet.

So, if you were not planning on anything deeper that 30 feet a $200 P&S with no dive case may be good enough.
