With the new UK football season due to start shortly I'm looking for a new case for my equipment. I've narrowed it down to a Pelicase either 1510 or 1560 (please dont suggest any other as I'm definately wanting a Pelicase). Equipment I plan to use are:
1Dmk2 & 1DMK3.
28-70L or 16-35L
70-200L f2.8
300Lf2.8 or 400L f2.8
x1.4 convertor
Other odds & sods such as raincovers.
I may (or maynot) go for the lid organiser too.

Although I dont plan to take it onboard an airplane but I understand the dimensions of the 1510 are within the current limits so this may be handy for the future.

Unfortunatley there isnt a Pelicase dealer near me to call on so if anyone reading this has either of these models I'd be grateful if you could confirm if my equipment would fit or not.

I have the 1510 and it's not very big, but would probably fit your line-up. The 1610 may be better, though since you want something to travel, the Think Tank Security is bigger and so is the International, but they zip.

Thanks for that link. I think that may rule out the 1510.

If you do travel a lot, especially in Europe, the International bag is very roomy and looks like regular luggage. That being said, many pros just jam pack their 1610's and actually check them, not fearing for damage or loss. Fully insured, the pros just let it go and hope for the best and some have said they always get their stuff when they arrived. I can't risk that. I always have my gear with me as I am gone on weekends and replacing a camera or lens, for instance, is not going to happen.

Graham,

Don't rule out the 1510, see this thread https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=426606 and see what I get in mine. I just bring my 400 to the game in my hand.

If I am traveling i can get the following into my 1510:
2 off 1D
16-35
70-200
400 2.8
1.4x
580ex
2 off 1D batteries

Thanks for the info John.
I think I may run out of hands though if I carry the 400 as I have my laptop in a Seaport case to carry.I've spoken to a few sports photogs and most seem to favour the 1560.Just been pricing them up on the net and theres about £10 between highest and lowest including dividers and lid organiser.
The airport thing is just something for the future....maybe.

I own the 1514 and while I love it, when I stuff my Canon 400f2.8 into it, I can fit in one body and nothing else. You'd want to look into a larger Pelican if you'll be packing the 400f2.8.

The 300f2.8 with hood is a tight fit with the lens hood in the 1514 as well. I have packed the 1514 with the 300f2.8 and a non-OEM hood, then creatively using the internal space to get in a 16-35f2.8 and 70-200f2.8 and two bodies.

Overall , look at a larger case.

Get the 1510. It's fantastic. Then any bits and bobs, like a wide angle, can go in a small bag with your laptop. Sorted!

Hi Graham,

I have the 1514 (i.e. 1510 with dividers) and the 1564 (1560 with dividers).

As Steven (fishfoto) mentions above, once you (literally) squeeze the 400mm into the 1514, there is very little room for anything else... one body, short lens, couple of batteries.

The 1514 is ideal if you're using your 300mm as your long glass. I can get two 1D bodies, 300mm, 70-200mm, wide zoom, spare batteries and flash in there quite comfortably. You can sit on it as well of course.

The 1564 is significantly more sizeable. It will hold the 400mm nicely, plus a couple of bodies, 70-200mm, wide angle, batteries, flash with space for other accessories, e.g. aquatechs. Again, it's a nice seat too. It is, however, pretty heavy so not ideal if you can't roll it for much of the journey from car to pitchside.

If you use a lid organiser in the Peli case, that will give you a bit of extra space for widgets.

Using either case, you'll still have to carry your laptop in a small shoulder bag.

Interesting to note that with the 1564, I can even fit a Gitzo GM2340 monopod in the lid organiser. One less thing to carry.

Very good price on 1564 with lid organiser: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk …6&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1318 (external link)

The alternative approach that I sometimes use is the Peli 1514 and Lowepro 650AW shoulder bag combo. I pack the 1514 fairly 'light' with 2 bodies, 70-200mm, wide angle, batteries, flash, etc. The 400mm fits nicely in the 650AW along with laptop (I use a 13" MacBook) and aquatechs. I pop my monopod under the (unzipped) lid of the 650AW.

This works well as everything goes in two bags with a good 'balance' - i.e. neither bag is too heavy. You also have the 1514 as a ready-to-go seat.

Hope that helps a bit.

---- Gavin

I have the 1610 and have almost exactly the setup you have. I am not farmiliar with the 1510, but I would make sure all the gear can fit in it. One of the things I really like about this case is that it can hold the 300 on the camera with the hood extended (even with the extender).

I have the 1510, and can fit in it:
  • 400mm f/2.8 IS
  • 70-200 f/2.8
  • 2 x 1Dmk2 Bodies
  • 1.4x Teleconverter
  • Manfrotto 680B Monopod

I'd like to see a pic of that because I've never gotten that much in mine. As Fish said it's very tight with a 400/2.8 in it. I know you said you want a Peli, they are beautiful cases I own a couple of them. My new Think Tank Airport security roller is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. I needed a bigger case I can fly with that will hold the 400 and other gear comfortably.

Hi Gavin
I have a Lowepro Vertex which I can (just) fit 2 bodies, 300f2.8, 70-200f2.8, x1.4, couple of rain covers, spare batteries and at a pinch 16-35f2.8. Plus it also has a section for a laptop but it would be so tight so I store my rain gear and a towel, bin liner (for those soggy cinder tracks) etc. The Vertex can also hold a monopod an collapable stool. Wouldnt like to try the 400 in it and strapped to my back hence the Peli. I alway carry my laptop in the Seaport case wich has the collapable hood. Handy for harsh sunlight or rain.

I think I'm still looking at the 1560 which should hold the 400f2.8 plus the other stuff easy so I could still use either backpack or Peli. Had a look on ebay but by the time I've added everything on it doesnt look any cheaper than the on-line stores so may try phoning and negociate a price :D.

Today I'm off for a couple of weeks to Turkey for some R&R before the season starts so have that time to think about it. Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.:D
