So I'm concentrating on star trails at the moment, and am looking at 3 hr plus exposures. As I'm using the long exposure noise reduction the processing time is the same as the exposure, meaning the camera could be busy non-stop for 6 hours.

Can anyone tell me if there is there an extra/remote power option that will be capable of handling this and more? I've heard of remote battery packs before...

Thanks

Have you thought about adding a grip and then you could double up on the batteries!

I already have two batteries in the grip, but I still don't think it'll power 6 hours + of constant recording and processing....

What camera?

Edit: Nevermind, saw the thread title.

You can use this with your battery charger, so you can use AC power.

that sensor is going to get pretty warm which will provide for a lot of noise. Any reason why you couldn't do a series of shorter exposures??

For star trails, The longer the exposure, the longer the star trails. It really looks better with long star trails. But the problem is, if you make it too long, there is the possibility of ambient lighting to lighten the sky, and you get a over exposed image.

For noise, just keep the ISO at 100 and turn of noise reduction to conserve battery.

Here are a couple that it did. Too bad, there was a lot of light.

First is 1 hour exposure

30 minute exposure

11 min exposure

Nice. Only thing is I'll be miles from the nearest plug socket and even my car!

Yeah. How long you can expose for depends on how bright the moon, noise pollution, where the sun is rising and other variables. It's quite possible to expose for 3 or 4 hours with my 5D with the noise reduction on, and then some Noise Ninja afterwards to lose alot of further noise. I'm not bothered about ambient light as long as the stars are still bright. Using ISO 200 and F4 is supposedly the best combination to keep the star trails brightest.

This is what I am photographing. This was 25 mins. The moon was full here hence the overexposure but I like the light on the buliding. I used too high an aperture though, so the star trails are weak. I'm going back to try again, and this time I'm going to step back, frame horizontally and get the whole circle of the polaris in:
