Hey all

i was thinking about putting together a small, mobile lighting kit.

Currently, I have:

580EX II
Elinchrom Skyport (1 receiver, 1 transmitter)
Lastolite 42" Silver/Gold reflector

I was wanting to finally get a light stand, bracket, and either an umbrella or softbox. I know that softboxes are preferred, but as far as mobility, i'm still new to this.

Any suggestions? Is a 1-light setup with a reflector enough??

Thanks in advance

Guess that depends on what you are shooting, and the look you are going for. You could probably cover a lot of ground with that set up, and it gives you plenty of room to expand. I would be happy with that set up until I started thinking "I wounder what this picture would looks like with more light coming from here, here, here and here." =P

Gear: Stone slab, hammer, chiseL, and crushed barries.

Yes a one light setup is enough. Looks like you have the basics for off cam shooting. Check out the Storbist on blogspot. You can get a decent lightstand for under 50 bucks and get a decent umbrella for under 40 like in the $20 dollar range. Its a nice base to start with.

Oops - sorry - forgot to say what I was shooting. Mostly models. Here's one from a few nights ago at the Indianapolis War Memorial...they didn't turn out too badly, but for these, flash was on camera, pointed up at 70 degrees with the catch-light card pulled out, with a flood-light for the memorial for the backlight...

OH - and photoshop. :)
