I have been playing around with 580ex manual mode off camera on a stand with umbrella. I am using a hot shoe adapter and sync cord to accomplish this.

I just ordered sunpack 383 also. What else do I need to be able to use it with what I have? I was thinking I would use the 580 on camera for fill or on another stand with umbrella. Will I still be able to use sync cord/adapter for the 383. I am assuming that the Sunpack will not slave to the 580.

Please help me out here. I feel as if I am learning a new language.

Good question. Can you use hot shoe adapter with a on camera flash on top?

And to answer your question, you could get a peanut optical slave for your off camera flash, so it will flash from your oon camera flash.

You can use this optical slave from Flash zebra.
http://www.flashzebra.com/opticalslaves/0073.shtml (external link)
And this monophone mini connector.
http://www.flashzebra.com/opticalslaves/0076.shtml (external link)
They will connect to the cord that comes with the Sunpak 383.

Or this combo if you don't want to use a slave and stay corded to your camera.
Male PC cord to mini plug
http://www.flashzebra.com/fivemetersync/alienbee.shtml (external link)
And the mini phone connector stated above.

Or buy a trigger like the Paul Buff Cybersyncs.I received mine a couple weeks ago and they work great.

If you e-mail Lon at Flashzebra telling him what you want to do he'll set you up with what you need. He can check to make sure I gave you the right info. He usually ships same day. Since you and he are in Kentucky you will probably get your order the next day.

I highly recommend Flashzebra.

The flash zebra site mentions that it can't be used with the 580EX. I would call them to check, to be on the safe side. Check the (*) below the pics.

You are correct. The optical slave will not work on the 580 EX. I thought she was going to use the 580 EX on the camera and use the optical slave for the Sunpak 383. It will work on the Sunpak.

The Sunpak 383 does not come with a case. If you want one this fits it perfectly. It is $9.95at B & H. It does have a small tag with the "N" word on it, but you can cut it off.

The Sunpak will not slave to the EX flash in ETTL mode. Put an optical trigger on it and use your EX in manual mode.

Now you've got your lighting taken care of get yourself a meter and make it easy.

Thanks very much for the replies. Would I be correct in assuming that the optical slave will have problems outdoors? If this is true then I guess I will go with the cybersyncs

Titus: I believe you are right about the light meter. The playing around I have done so far I can already tell you that this chimp and adjust method is for the birds.
