Not the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. The consensus IS that any of these FD to EF adaptors degrade the image quality. I'm not familiar with this exact Canon lens, but I'd say the short answer is no.

There IS a high quality Canon brand FD to EF adaptor, but it commands a ridiculous price.

I actually converted an FD 200mm 2.8 to EF mount, but it was no fun, is irreversable, and certainly not worth the time, cost or trouble.

If you MUST have a 500mm mirror lens, waltz around for one that you can adapt, say, in Nikon mount, or a Tamron Adaptall, which have a good reputation.

The disadvantage of ANY of these mirror lenses is, most of them are fixed aperture, which of course limits what you can do, but worse, the background blur is a horrid mess in many cases.

I do have a Tamron Adaptall SP 500mm F8, but my health is such that I cannot handhold it, and the viewfinder on an Xt is so small that focusing it is a REAL PITA. In other words, the "keeper" rate is low.

---EDIT--- further ramblings. I did find this:

which offered some pictures. Because this lens has no complicated linkages in the mount area (it's fixed aperture) it just might be possible to tear it apart, do a little machine work, and make a simple conversion to EF mount. Once again, this would be an irreversible project

He doesnt ask about quality, the op simply wanted to know if it will "work"

thank you for the comments. the photo quality is definitely nice to know. it may not be worth messing with this. i'm certainly not going to modify the lens because it isn't mine. the adaptor from B&H isn't very expensive so i might give it a shot, but maybe i shouldnt have high expectations for good photos.

I've got a non-Canon 500mm lens and adapter, although mine's not a mirror-type. The quality may not be the best, but it usually beats not having the photo. The reach of a 500mm lens opens up opportunities that you just can't get otherwise. I also have an old Canon 300 F4 lens and I can tell you that the additional reach is significant. Go for it and I think you'll find you enjoy it and get some good pictures.
