I just purchase the EF-S 17-85 IS from amazon.com and then I discovered it was "made in Taiwan" !!!!!!! I remembered this lens used to be "made in Japan".. Anybody knows what is going on ? And where can I get one that is Made in Japan... I understand the one coming from Taiwan is usually of a lower grade.

Thanks.

Welcome to PTON.

Regarding your question I would have thought it was made in Japan, I didn't know Canon made any lenses in Taiwan apart from maybe the lowest of the range ones.

P.S Just checked my 17-85 and it's made in Japan, it's not a entry level lens and should be made in Japan. I hope this is not a sign of things to come.

It doesn't mather where the lens is made!!! THe lens is made with specs of Canon and the Lens from Japan... should be exactly the same as the lens from Taiwan!!!

I dont care if i could buy a 400 2.8 IS from Taiwan for a lower price than from Japan :-)

Maybe it's just me but I don't like to buy any quality product made in China/Taiwan etc, I like it to be made in Japan/USA/Germany etc a place where they pay people a fair wage for a days work and where quality has real importance not quantity regardless of anyone saying they would have high levels of QC in-place.

Maybe I'm just old school :).

P.S I'm the opposite if Im spending big $ on an item and I can pick between a 400L f2.8 made in Tiawan and one made in Japan I would pay a fair amount of extra money for the Japan version. Must be my old fashion way of thinking :).

Same here, thats why I bought mine from Japan and would like to pay the extra shipping cost.

If you have any friend in Japan, just ask them to help you. Shipping cost would around 2000 Yen, which is 35ish USD, though depends on weight.

Im in UK and it only takes 3 days to arrive and I have never been charged by Customs. My friend declared they were just a hood, a book or repaired one. :D

If you are in Australia, i think it only takes 1 day to arrive.

I think you might be in for a shock.

Made in doesn't mean everything is made in. It can mean assembled in.

Your product could be made in Taiwan or Chine and sold as Made in where ever it's assembled.

When a Chinese company bought the Uk Rover car company, one idea was to ship the parts all the way back for assembly in the UK, because it was thought it would keep with the kudos.

Two schools of thought here. Some say the location of manufacture matters while others think likewise. It's like the Leica lenses where collectors prize German-made lenses above Canadian-made ones. Ultimately though, they are supposed to be of equal quality.

The 17-85 I had in the past was made in Japan. The 18-55 that came with my 350D however, was made in Taiwan.

Gosh, what kind of ridiculous prejudice is that?

This is sickening.

A large portion of the worlds electronics are made in Taiwan. TV's, monitors, computers... these are all fairly complex items and low quality doesn't seem to be a big issue.

and if wage of the workers is a big issue, I know in the steel industry, workers in taiwan can be making as muxh as 15-20 US$ per hour....roughly 60 -70% of their US counter parts... not a bad wage... remember in manufacturing quality can have more to do with the facility then an individuals wage. Also, don't confuse Taiwan with mainland china, there is a big difference.

I don't think I'm being prejudice, it's just my honest opinion and I stand by it. There is also nothing "sickening" about it, one would almost think you take it personal, I suggest you take a chill pill and learn to respect each persons opinion. :)

I'm not saying good quality items can't be made in these countries I'm just saying that given the option I would rather the alternative, it gives me some peace of mind, some may think that's silly and I have no problem with that but I know I'm not the only consumer that feels this way when it comes to precision electronics.

My 28-105 II USM is made in Taiwan. Some models of this lens are made in Japan as well. My only complaint is the zoom ring is stiff, jumpy, and loose all at the same time... but I can't complain since its as sharp as a tack ;)
