I'm about to send off a cashback claim to Canon for a lens, but I'm wondering how much of the box I need to cut out and send in :)

The box has three barcodes on it: serial number, EAN/JAN code and UPC code. Do I need to cut all three barcodes out or just the UPC barcode?

Send them ALL.

That's what I did - it just means a bit bigger hole in your box, which will be ruined as a collector's item, but will remain, when all is said and done, as a box.

Cashback is cashback, and worth more than any supposed premium you might get by selling the lens with its box intact!

I guess I'm resigned to cutting a bigger hold in the box than I'd like to!! I'm not keeping it as a collectors item, but I'm still using it to store the lens case in, so trying to maintain as much structural integrity as possible :)

Why not photo copy them?
Save cutting up the box.

Because you must send the original.

I sent them all. Better to guarantee the rebate than allow Canon/Rebate Handler to crawl out of giving you the money on a technicality.

Canon rebates are notorious for 'not happening' even when you do everything right - this is more a problem in the States than in Europe though. The three cashbacks the center in Tipperary have done for me all went smoothly.

But damn, I hated chopping holes in my boxes - I use them to store all the little bits that come with the gear, and i like them intact!

Yep, cut them all out, send em off, and get on with life even though you now have a box with a hole in it... Old lens boxes don't take pictures!
(I always photocopy them as well for my own records in case they 'loose' them)

Yep, I agree with all of that. I haven't even thrown any of the docs away, even though the cheques are long-since cashed and spent!

I dump all the paperwork when the cheques arrive and clear through my bank account - in fact the last one I did as a direct deposit through my IBAN .

I don't keep old papers longer than necessary - I even shred my bank and CC statements as soon as they are balanced and paid. Life is too short and my house is too small.
